The beauty, elegance and grace of a hardwood floor can only be described with the warmth an inviting nature that is reflected. Adding significant value to the interior or any home or place of business, hardwood floors are rapidly becoming the flooring selection of choice, replacing its predecessor, the carpeted floor. Hardwood floors, un-finished, finished or engineered, require daily cleaning with a periodic annual maintenance program to retain the luster, deep rich tones and the overall beauty of any wood floor. Contrary to popular belief, these floors do require occasional waxing, depending on traffic flow across the floor, with specialized cleaners designed to seal and protect the floor from scratches and abuse. In the past, presumptions have indicated that all the maintenance that is required for a wood floor is light sweeping and mopping. Although, there is some truth to this theory, depending on the selection of flooring material, failure to provide adequate protection to any floor will result in deterioration and damage of the flooring surface at an accelerated rate with possible replacement in as little as five years.
Cost for engineered hardwood flooring is based on the thickness of the substrate or layers of plywood material that comprises the overall composition and the selection of the finished top layer. With thicknesses varying from ¼” to 9/16”, with the most common thickness of 3/8” to ½” selected, engineered wood floors average $3.25 per square foot depending on thickness and selection of finished surface, professionally installed. Significant savings are noticeable when installed by the homeowner, reducing overall costs to approximately $2.00 per square foot which can add up to significant savings depending on the overall size of the room. With basic mechanical ability and use of standard installation tools, a hardwood floor can easily be easily installed over a weekend with satisfaction that boost even the most sublime egos. Regardless of selection, natural hardwood or engineered wood floors offer intrinsic value to any home with active lifestyles increasing the overall value of the home substantially. Hardwood floors add elegance and beauty to any interior room of the home with a high traffic pattern requiring less maintenance while maintaining the overall beauty within.
How durable is the finish? Durability is probably the most important things to consider when purchasing a prefinished hardwood floor. The finish is what you are actually walking on and must be very durable to have a beautiful lasting floor for years to come. Many imported prefinished floors have very little durability and the finish can be taken off with a few swipes of 150 grit sandpaper. When buying hardwood there are a few ways to test the finish: one would be to take 150 grit sandpaper and rub the finish to see if the finish will come off and two would be to firmly press the edge of a coin against the finish, a quality finish will dent but not come off. Quality manufacturers will have aluminum oxide or better yet titanium oxide hardeners in the finish. Many offshore manufactured products will say they have aluminum oxide in them but actually do not. To test if a hardwood floor has aluminum oxide in the finish simply put the sample in your microwave and if it sparks, it does indeed have aluminum oxide in the finish. I know that may seem a little strange but it's something worth checking because hardwood flooring is a big investment and you want to know the durability of the finish.
