Although it is not recommended, you can have Bruce hardwood flooring in the bathroom of your home. This is because hardwood is not conducive to areas of the home where there is excessive moisture. The choice to use unfinished or prefinished Bruce wood flooring is a matter of personal taste. It depends on how much work you want to do to finish the floor yourself or how much time you want to spend on maintenance of the Bruce hardwood floors. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so you can ask the Bruce experts for advice when you are selecting your hardwood flooring. Prefinished hardwood does have more advantages, such as longer finish warranties, uniform stain application in a factory setting and it is easier to keep clean.
Hardwood floors, regardless of finish or manufacturer's specifications require periodic maintenance including the application of an approved wax/polish designed for a particular wood flooring material species. Hardwood floors left unprotected will in time, fade, discolor revealing signs of visible deterioration under normal daily use. With proper care and maintenance of all hardwood material, the original beauty and luster can be maintained with reflections of pride in your home while protecting your investment.
Dog hair is another aspect to consider. If you have a particularly hairy dog, it is now (more than ever) time to stay on top of grooming your dog. Regular baths and the use of de-shedding brushes like a Mars comb are perfect for this. Sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping regularly will keep the dog hair up. Dog hair can get in between the boards and snag on just about everything. Keeping your dog properly groomed regularly will help cut down on this. But the fact that you have to face is that a dog is completely covered with hair, whether long or short. That hair is going to get shed around the house regularly and it is going to be a lot more visible on a hardwood floor. Another issue to consider is the kind of hardwood flooring that you are installing. A lot of pre-fab tongue-and-groove-type flooring have gaps between the pieces. Not huge gaps, some are rather subtle, but there is a gap nonetheless. This gap is going to potentially get filled with doggie dirt and funk. Get hardwood with the smallest gaps possible between your boards. In your consideration of the hardwood that you are getting, you also want to make sure that it is a hardwood that can be refinished. That way you can have it buffed regularly.
In a home with shabby hardwood floors, the biggest improvement you can make is to refinish the floors. Begin by making any necessary repairs, and then removing all the furniture and drapes and sealing the vents and registers in the room so that you won't spread dust throughout the house. Sanding floors is easiest to do with a drum sander and an edging machine for the sides and corners of the room. You can rent these machines, and it is a good idea to rent a buffer or floor polisher at the same time. Plan to make three passes with your sanding equipment, using increasingly finer sandpaper each time. Vacuum carefully and pick up every bit of fine dust and grit with tacking cloths. All dust and dirt must be removed. You can now apply a stain if you wish or you can leave the natural color and design of the wood – such as the popular oak, maple, or cherry – to be displayed. Polish and clean the dust and dirt from the floor again, and then apply your sealer – a polyurethane or a water-based urethane that provides a protective barrier, or oil and wax, which penetrates the wood and protects from within. Carefully read all the information accompanying each product, follow the safety advice, and apply as many coats of stain or sealer as suggested by the manufacturer of the products you are using.
