Water and sunlight is a wood floor's worst enemy causing more damage to all layers of the flooring material than all other elements combined. Mopping wood flooring surfaces with excessive water in the mop head, allows water to seep in between the seams of the flooring material gradually but eventually destroying the substructure of the hardwood flooring material. Mopping a wood floor with excessive amounts of water also institutes possible mold infiltration under the flooring surface, which will continue to grow unnoticed, a major health hazard in any home. Application of a manufactured recommended sealer and wax combination, seals all joint and seams, preventing water damage to under layers while adding brilliant luster to the finished top layer.
Dog hair is another aspect to consider. If you have a particularly hairy dog, it is now (more than ever) time to stay on top of grooming your dog. Regular baths and the use of de-shedding brushes like a Mars comb are perfect for this. Sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping regularly will keep the dog hair up. Dog hair can get in between the boards and snag on just about everything. Keeping your dog properly groomed regularly will help cut down on this. But the fact that you have to face is that a dog is completely covered with hair, whether long or short. That hair is going to get shed around the house regularly and it is going to be a lot more visible on a hardwood floor. Another issue to consider is the kind of hardwood flooring that you are installing. A lot of pre-fab tongue-and-groove-type flooring have gaps between the pieces. Not huge gaps, some are rather subtle, but there is a gap nonetheless. This gap is going to potentially get filled with doggie dirt and funk. Get hardwood with the smallest gaps possible between your boards. In your consideration of the hardwood that you are getting, you also want to make sure that it is a hardwood that can be refinished. That way you can have it buffed regularly.
There are so many things that we should not do with our floorings. The primary thing to consider is not to use ammonia, bleach, regular floor cleaner, dusting products. Also, avoid using wax on a floor that has a glossy finish or urethane. We should never wash our flooring we can use a damp mop to clean but not with a mop that is dripping with water. In our effort to maintain the proper condition of our flooring, there are also protective and repair measure that we must follow. For example if there are burn marks in the hardwood, we can lightly sand the affected part, use a damp cloth to remove the grit and then we can refinish them. Scratches and gouges can be concealed using wood putty. We should let the wood putty dry and then we can sand them and refinish.
The cost of hardwood flooring is usually higher if you source them from home improvement establishments and local dealers. The latter has the advantage of possible price negotiations and typically offering free samples. Liquidators and flooring wholesalers both offer competitive prices. However, the latter's supply of hardwood flooring cannot be guaranteed and no warranty is usually offered. Floorboard wholesalers offer hardwood flooring at more affordable rates and are more reliable stocked. Furthermore, most will ship free samples to prospective buyers. Make sure to compare suppliers to be able to get the best deal possible.
