Another reason that it's faster to install laminate flooring than it is hardwoods is because laminate planks are made somewhat wider than hardwood planks. This means that you'll have fewer boards to cut and install which will mean you can finish the process in a much shorter time. You'll like the awesome durability of laminate flooring. It is designed to be about fifteen times as strong as the best natural hardwood flooring. Because of its strength, it's much more difficult to damage a laminate floor, and it will stand up to high traffic much better than the solid wood does. Many laminate flooring products come with a ten or fifteen year warranty which is considerably longer than the warranties offered for hardwoods. This shows that the manufacturers of laminates have more confidence in the durability of their products, and you can, too. This is good, because laminates cannot be sanded and refinished to renew their beauty like hardwoods can.
Flooring manufacturers have picked up on the wood laminate floor trend quite quickly, and are already producing laminated planks and tiles in a dizzying array of textures, styles, and colors. Installation formats also vary, including click lock, glue down, and floating, just to name a few. With there being so many options as far as installation formats, pretty much anyone can install their own laminate floor, should they so choose. The companies Armstrong and Pergo have become household names through their laminate floors. Lots of other manufacturers are also making names for themselves by bringing to market surprisingly high quality discount laminate flooring and finishes that would delight any customer.
Cash and carry vs. installed purchase. This is always a tough one because a flooring product is only as good as the installation. I have seen a lot of want to-be independent installers out there that can ruin a laminate or hardwood job. Most carpet installers are not carpenters, but many do pretend to be. It is rare to find an installer that can do it all. As a matter of fact, I have yet to find one. Many are top notch at some types of flooring, but not others. So when you hire a friend of a friend, or someone working under their own shingle, are you guaranteed the type of installation you expect? Also, when using a moonlighting installer, you should be paying no more than 50-60% of the prevailing rate of the independent retailer installation rate. I have seen moonlighting installers charge half again as much for an installation than the customer could have gotten from a flooring store. When you have the flooring store install the product, there will be no finger-pointing should there ever be an issue. There are so many different complications that can happen after an installation, and if you are dealing with a rock solid independent retail store, you have protection. In my opinion, there needs to be significant savings for you when you cash and carry a product. If you have the ability to install on your own, then there is normally a substantial savings realized and I say go for it. If not, let the experts do it.
Originating as a company making lacquered boards for the shipbuilding industry, Alloc started production of high pressure laminate flooring in 1992. In 1996 it introduced a mechanical locking system that allows the laminate boards to be laid without glue. Originally, most laminate floors replicated only the most in-demand wood floors. As laminate grew in popularity however, other looks were introduced, including highly realistic stone and marble. Unlike solid wood or engineered wood flooring products which are usually nailed or glued to the sub floor, laminate flooring floats on the sub floor. The individual strips or planks of many laminate systems snap together while other systems do require the application of small amount of adhesive along the joints. Unlike traditional hardwood floors, laminate floors do not require periodic sanding and refinishing. The top protective layer is all that's needed. Unlike hardwood flooring, there is no need to polish your laminate floor. You can simply clean it with wet cloth and vacuum cleaner to dust out the dirt.
