The Pros of Ceramic Floor Tiles in the Home. One of the biggest advantages of using ceramic tiles in flooring is that the range and scope of design, pattern, colour, style and overall aesthetic is virtually unlimited. Unique and inspired designs can be easily created allowing for individual tastes to be easily catered for. The tiles also last a considerable amount of time and should not need replacement in a lifetime. Ceramic tiles are also easy to clean and are therefore low maintenance compared to other materials. The durability of the ceramic tile is also a plus, as it can take a high degree of traffic without becoming worn.
Before you can begin your ceramic tile flooring installation, you must make sure that the tiles you have chosen are well-suited for the section of the house you are going to use them for. Ceramic tile flooring is resistant to moisture, water spillage and sudden extreme changes in temperature and are usually used in bathrooms or kitchens, and sometimes in other areas of the house as well. Once you have made sure of the section of flooring that you will use ceramic tiling for and also the tiles that you want to use – you are ready to begin.
The first step in the removal of ceramic tile is to take out the trim covering the edges of the tiles. Next, scrape out the grout found on the perimeter of the tiles. Caulking on the vertical corners should also be properly scraped out. For removing these elements, equipments such as sharp utility knife, razor blade, and grout saw with wooden or plastic handle can be used. Once the tiles are free of grout and caulk, tapping can be done on the tiles to check whether any of the tiles is loose.
For plywood subfloors, be sure that the wood is at least 1 and 1/8 inches thick and is supported by an equally strong underlayment. Otherwise, your ceramic tiles will dislodge easily, or worse, break and need replacing. Concrete floors are the most ideal subfloor surface to work with. But before you can start installing ceramic tile flooring over it, it must be cleaned thoroughly. For dust and other debris, sweep and then mop your concrete subfloor surface, and allow it to dry completely. Smooth concrete surfaces must be rough sanded just like vinyl floors to allow the tiling mortar some grip. You can begin window-shopping and canvassing for ceramic tiles once you have the space or area estimated. Ceramic floor tiles come in a variety of prices, shapes, textures and styles. Pick a tile type that's within your price range and ask to see it in what a palette of colors. The most common ceramic tile size is one square foot. But ceramic tiles may come in a wide array of sizes; from one inch, to two feet.
